Hi Bubba thank you for your welcome. Hope you had a good time on Crete, I remember staying there many years ago in a hotel that in some ways resembled Fawlty Towers in terms of the arguments and sounds of plates being thrown but much friendlier. Hope you had a good time.He did not say you will not be storm tossed, you will not be sore distressed, you will not be work weary. He said you will not be overcome.

frogmella wrote:Welcome home, Bubba. I hope you think I have looked after things ok?? Good to hear you had a good holiday.
I have read a couple of Jane Fallon's books. I think her first one was good.
I am really enjoying Mr Mercedes - another page turner from Mr King!
My dear friend you have done a marvellous job as I knew you would, and thank you for doing a post on promoting The Book Club. Had a fantastic time in Crete and I love my Kindle Fire!0 -
Can I suggest just in case LisaW doesn't decide to choose Book Of The Month For July that anyone else who has a suggestion put it forward and hopefully we can make a decision for the end of the week which book will be Book Of The Month For July.0
-
Thank you, Bubba! I felt the responsibility!!! If LisaW doesn't suggest a book how about Morgue Drawer Four as DD suggested in my promotional thread? It was, at least last week, 99p on kindle if that helps too?
Glad you had a good holiday!0 -
Happy for Morgue Drawer Four to be nominated as BOTM for July. I am really intrigued by the title already! I agree with Frogmella, as it seems to have had quite a bit of publicity already it probably is on fellow book clubbers radars already. Plus at 99p on kindle, is a real steal.
Funnily enough, I just bought Mr Mercedes yesterday. I really do enjoy a good S.King story. He is a legend when it comes to storytelling.
Also, happy to suggest a book for August or any other month.0 -
Oooh, LisaW, Mr Mercedes has meant that I have done hardly anything today!! It is a really good Stephen King. I love him.0
-
Fantastic!! Okay we will go with Morgue Drawer Four by Jutta Profijt for July's Book Of The Month for all Kindle owners it's price as of today 24/06/2014 is £1.00 & paperback £7.64. Hope everyone enjoys it and I look forward to reading your reviews.
lisaW you are more than welcome to choose next month's BOTM so you have plenty of time to decide.0 -
Mr Mercedes by Stephen King
This is more of a thriller than a horror story, with the usual little bit of psychological stuff thrown in for good measure. It is a cat and mouse thing between a mass killer and a retired detective. I raced through it and really enjoyed it. *****
Going to start Burial Rites today and have ordered Cross Stitch from the library to read after that on my holiday (in two weeks and two days, not that I am counting!!).
Having suggested morgue drawer four I now find it is not available in the library except as an audio book! :roll:0 -
If you have A****n prime then morgue drawer four is available to borrowHe did not say you will not be storm tossed, you will not be sore distressed, you will not be work weary. He said you will not be overcome.

I know that you mean Frogmella!! Just started reading Mr. M and can't put it down. Hopefully I leave myself enough time to read our BOTM. I will suggest a title or two for August soon.
Been thinking about subscribing to A***** prime Slosh. Have you found it worth it? It seems like a good deal, but not sure if I will make full use of the services offered. However, being able to borrow books on the service is really swaying me to sign up. Thoughts anyone?0 -
Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend, if the weather stays as it is I will be tucked up on the sofa reading!! The weather has turned rubbish it must be time for Glastonbury!!0
-
Still got the sun here in East London. Looking forward to catching up with a friend tomorrow over tea and cream cakes. Glastonbury and Wimbledon, you know that means rain!He did not say you will not be storm tossed, you will not be sore distressed, you will not be work weary. He said you will not be overcome.

Please may I join the Book Club? Just finished reading Mr Mercedes and thoroughly enjoyed it. I raced through it, too, frogmella. I always enjoy Stephen King's books, but have sometimes found that his endings often leave a lot to be desired. However, the ending of his last book, 11/23/63 was much better and it was interesting to read that his son worked with him on the ending.
Now working my way through some Scandinoir, which I love. I've read all of Henning Mankell's books and am now reading books by Johan Theorin and Hakan Nesser - both Swedish crime writers.
Just going to download Morgue Drawer Four which looks fascinating.

Stephen King's writing is delicious. I have just finished The Shining, before I read the sequel, and it was brilliant. His descriptions are just without precedence. I am resisting Mr Mercedes at the moment as I have Dr Sleep waiting for my attention. The Shining is probably best read in the winter but it so good that I am sure you will enjoy it at anytime. It is a horror story though, so if you are a little delicate then it may not be for you as it describes mallets going through flesh/ Knives/ dead bodies festering in baths etc in graphic detail. Whatever your view on horror, King is just an absolute master when it comes to English and telling a story. Enjoy......0

Glad you enjoyed reading The Shining, I do enjoy Stephen King movies but have never thought of reading his books, after your review I'm seriously thinking of putting a couple of his books on my reading list!
Megrose489 Of course you can join The Book Club, you don't need to ask it's open to everyone. Welcome and I look forward to reading your book reviews.
Didn't get chance to read at all the weekend! We ended up going sofa buying and have got a lovely new sofa on it's way and also went and visited my Nan. And in between all that watched football and Wimbledon!! Hoping to get some reading done this week as I have a quiet one!0 -
Read just over half of Safe House now, really enjoying it, the way it keeps you guessing & the suspense wants me to read more of it but I like to stop reading When Mr Bubba gets home from work. So I lie on the day bed in the Conservatory of an afternoon with the doors open so it lets the heat in with the rugrats spread out snoozing next to me. It's bliss!!0

I finished Burial Rites by Hannah Kent yesterday. I thought it was a good book. Not cheerful by any count, but again, it made me think. It is about Agnes who has been sentenced to death for murder but who has to live with a family until the execution is arranged. It is set in the early 1800's in Iceland. There is the main story of the farm where she is placed, the story between her and her priest (sent to tend to her and bring her to God as it were) and then the back story is woven in. Another winter read really but very good.

Going to start Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon next, should sort me for my holiday!0 -
Thank you very much Frogmelia, that was a really useful review. I have read a few pages and through no fault of the book i have not carried on - life distracted me. i think I will save it as a winter read as I have a list of stuff in front of it which is hopefully a bit more summary . Now looking forward to it when the nights draw in.0

In the summer we all have jobs & other things that take over our time so we don't have so much time to read. But I like to take an hour or two out of my day when I can go sit some were usually our conservatory in the summer and kick back and read, it relaxes me and does seem to help with any tension I have. Arnie & Willow usually join me and they have a snooze because it's lovely and warm in there.0

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND EVERYONE!!0
-
I have started Cross Stitch and it is OK. Not sure I am going to love it but we will see. Got a busy few days - trying to sell my old car before my new one comes next week.!0
-
Cross Stitch sounds interesting.
I have just started reading "Fall of Giants "by Ken Follet ,it follows five families though the upheavals of the early 20th century and I'm hooked already. Mig0 -
Safe House by Chris Ewan
I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book at first but the more and more I read the more and more I enjoyed it. The story keeps you wanting to read more and not put the kindle down. The story is very clever, at 1st you think okay it's set in the Isle Of White not a lot of crime goes on around there and the only excitement is the TT racing! The story starts with the main character Rob who is a plumber going out on a job to a cottage to fix a boiler, he meets this woman named Lena who he gets talking to and his motorbike is brought up in conversation and Lena fancies going out with him on the Bike, next day he takes her and they have a crash and the story gets going from there as he asks how Lena was to be told she doesn't exist. He knows she does. Mean while Robs father brings in a private detective to look into his daughters suspected suicide and Rob asks the P.D if she would also help him look for Lena. And from there the story gets more and more twisted and exciting! I really enjoyed it held my interest right to the end. What I would say is the ending could have been a little bit better.

Ooh. Mig, My friend recommended that book to me, she is a history teacher and said it was ace!
To be fair Cross Stitch is OK, just I have an idea it might get a bit silly! We'll see! Anyway I have the latest Alison Weir in transit to the library, let's hope it gets there before my hols on Thursday!
Bubba, that book does sound good, think I will have to put that one on my list too!0
