Hi Iris,
I do hope you are feeling so much better. I know after a big op you feel as if you are never going to recover, but you will get there, believe me. We scots are a tough lot, just make sure you have your porridge daily, and rest these hands. I am thinking of you. Love, Beth0 -
Hi Iris,

It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -

Hi Marion,
I am sorry I was so tired (still am actually ) I didn't see this.
He is a little premature and it was a long night as he had problems getting up... in the end I lifted him as he had to drink. He is a lot stronger tonight but still a bit behind, in a week he will be fine.
He's skewbald and be honest even prem he is big. Thankfully he is the last one but there will be 5 next year I can sleep tonight as I am shattered
Hope your ok? Cris x
Hi Iris,
Just topping up your hugs, drafts and I will fly up tomorrow.... oh I wont need to as the bus is on its way and we are all coming with you. Have big pockets else we will be squashed

Hi everyone and thanks for all the kind thoughts, advice, hugs, good wishes, carrots, greens and honey sticks and of course your company in out patients.
Hope you've had a whip round to pay for illegally parking the red bus in the ambulance bay at the Western & Gartnavel Hospitals... just who was driving??!!!!
My appointment today went really well folks
Got the heavy PoP cast off and stitches out (didn't look at that bit as advised! thanks).
Swelling gone, hand and arm looking battered and bruised still but not green or dead (zombie) looking ! wound not quite closed so steri strips applied and dry dressing.
Surgeon delighted with progress and x rays looking good. :P
Then came the hard bit   First the surgeon moved my poor wee wrist up and down (just a little bit and gently too) then asked me  to turn it over and as far as I could....supination that's called. oooyaaa!!!!!!! I could think of another word for it.!
As you would expect (dread) Physio wasn't as gentle when he took over.....help!
I did get a gold star for being able to bend all fingers and make a fist...even the physio was impressed.
(I had the advantage of knowing how important that was after the fusion on the other hand last year..so had been exercising the fingers from day one) clever old me!...
There was a lot of discussion between surgeon and physio about the op, what had been done and exactly what angle the new splint should be, and what degrees of movements/ exercises were to be carried out for the next 5 weeks, until I return to see him.
Physio later told me that my surgeon had not only transferred tendons from one side of the hand to the other but 'plaited' them to produce a very strong support for the ulnar side of the hand (ulna head removed during op as well as the TWR).
Surgeon sent me to have photos taken too...so there's to be a record of it all.
Had new tailor made splint made ...light weight and removable for physio... agghhh!! ouch! that was a painful process having that moulded! (I am a big baby you all know  )
12 weeks from now, surgeon said, with hand therapy and determination the wrist will be 'all that it's going to be'. He does not expect me to ever have full movement (arther's taken care of that) but it will be pretty useful and pain free. meantime I've not to overdo the exercises, not lift and definitely not fall on it or it will break.
THAT'S good enough for me..............................and I am so delighted!
thanks everyone for all your support and Cris for her wonderful flying back and fore.......I will post occasionally but not as much as I would like to so as to rest the hard worked left fused wrist but had to share my good news today!.

I am so pleased! That sounds really, really good, and it is lovely, LOVELY to hear from you again. Rest now, be sensible with the exercises etc and hear from you again soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Well done Iris for the mega update. That was a really interesting read, especially regarding the ulna and plaited tendons - d'you suppose your surgeon is a frustrated hairdresser  :?
You rest you wrist now and get back in your run ...you have a mountain to food to get through before you're allowed back
Thanks again,
Luv LegsLove, Legs x

Hi Iris, great to hear an update.
Sounds like an intense time at the hospital - wow!!
How novel - surgeon and physio working together!!
Make sure you dose up well/budget your painkillers for physio sessions to get you through .. you have your work cut out - but sounds like it will be SO worth it.
My rubbishy old left THR leg is tired and aching at the mo - supporting the new FAB hip ... so I sympathise with your poor fused wrist doing the jobs of two hands.
Take care balancing rest and exercise,
Lovely to hear from you,
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hello Iris
Great to hear from you.. gosh - you have had a very clever operation!!
Take it easy and hope your pain is under control.. just think of all those Christmas cards you will be able to write in 5 months time!!
Marion x0 -
Hi Iris,
So glad it going well and he was pleased Also glad you got that heavy old cast off but they are best initially.
So will you be able to turn your hand palm up? I am both fascinating and going down that rod as you know and just wondered.
Will be better at the flying u in the ,morning and sorry I have been a bit erratic but this foaling was the longest and most lack of sleep for a very long time  He is getting better each day though
You have a good night and do you think your being over feed green? I am leaving you a bowl of special healing draft... I dd sip some sorry Take good care of your self flower and I will knock on your window after the pain clinic. Love and tons of ((((( ))))) Cris xxx0 -
Hi DD I am trying to be good....am tap tapping with a gadget my son made for me which I can hold with thumb and two fingers to spread the load and take the pressure off the one typing finger. clever or what? (him not me of course!)
Ive been watching your threads so know you're going thro mill just now DD. take care to rest and am sharing my honey sticks with you to help you feel better. x
Hi Legs I'm as fat as butter with all this lavish guinea food so will have to turn the wheel a million times to burn it off!
glad you found update interesting....you may be right about the surgeon ....I'll ask if he did some of his training at hairdressing school , shall I?
hope your hands aren't too painful just now? xx
Hi Wonky :!: the physio's bound to be painful eh  but at least I now know what to expect. good thing is that I've been referred back to the specialist hand therapist at my local hospital and she is to do the physio which is great as I know her well and more importantly..she knows me well.
I expect to get a call today to get started as surgeon/ physio marked the card 'urgent'. gulp!
how are you doing?
Hi speedy you are so right about dosing up before physio  I was murdered with pain after yesterday's episode and was like a junkie looking for a fix by the time I got home.
mind you I was 4hrs in hospital yesterday ...sent from one hospital where I saw surgeon and physio..to their sister hospital for Orthotics to measure and make the splint so meds had well worn off :!:
sorry to hear your left THR troubling you  is it likely to need replacing did they say?
Hi marion clever op and very clever surgeon too :!: so I have high hopes of success.....over to me now to make the best of the rehab.
Xmas cards! omg....what a thought! but anyway I use a well advertised internet card company so they go direct to my saved family/ friends 'list'....no writing for me involved
also do all birthdays etc same way..it is brilliant!
how's your hip doing?
Hi Cris...me old feathered friend
good luck at the pain clinic this morn hope it eases the pain through those trigger points xxxxx
remember...YOU need to rest up...so no flying today :!:
tuck in to those healing foods...and have another nip o brandy before you go...medicinal of course
glad bracken is getting stronger.... please take care Cris not to exhaust yourself.
(((((((hugs))))))) coming right back at ya!
oh....and yes! I WILL be able to turn my hand palm up! may be not completely over but was able yesterday to turn it (shakily) more than half way already.... and that's only 2 weeks post op. so encouraging! as couldn't do that before the op; so take heart flower...x
love to all....Will look in later but off now to my morphine haze...
Irisxxxx0 -
Wow, Iris that was a mega-post!! Clever son to design you a gadget ... he should have a go at marketing it!!
Sounds like your wrist holds great promise. Yesterday was quite an ordeal with two hospitals ... but good news you will be having physio from now on with a hand specialist who you know and trust.
The shaking you describe as you turned your hand over - is like my hip in the early days post-op.
No my left THR doesn't need revising yet (thank goodness) the muscles are just struggling with the extra workload ... it wasn't a great result and since the op, has always been my second best leg!Good job new hip is going to come up trumps.
Keep resting ...take care,

Thank you for the honey sticks - yum yum! - and your kind thoughts, they are much appreciated. Us PA girls have to stick together! Have returned from meth stabbing and feel lousy due to that and another poor night. Ho hum, c'est la vie. You get plenty of rest, nothing wrong with morphine-induced pink fluffy clouds. Enjoy!
