Hiya! Distractring myself before I leave! I have read into the darkest corner. Pretty sure it was brilliant. (checks journal) yes - read it last Jan.
Not sure about book of the month. I am waiting for The fault in our stars by John Green. How about that one? Got a high profile at the moment so may be easy to get?
Anyway. I am delaying! See you on the other side.

I'd reccomend Popular Music From Vittula (sometimes jus Popular Music) by Mikael Niemi.
It's a sort of coming of age story about two young boys in the remote Arctic region of Tornedalen in Sweden (not far from the famous Ice Hotel!) in the 1950's. The story follows two young boys as they discover rock 'n' roll music and dream about being in a rock band. It follows them into their teenage years with a very gritty and realistic view of life in that area with the usual family and small town life.
Covering everything from life and death to religion and vodka fuelled sauna competitions (surprisingly not where the death part comes in!), ghosts, a pretty surreal plane journey and a really disgusting "summer job" it's a really intrieguing story with real depth to the characters and the environment where they live which realy plays a part in shaping the people you see them become as the story progresses.

The Complete Works of Plato
Now before you start thinking WTH, let me say what an amazing book this is!!! - Honestly!!
When I first read Plato and the Socratic dialogues I was really really surprised at how accessable they were and how easy they were to read and understand. I first had to read some of Plato's books at uni but I kept on reading more and more beyond the required reading because I found them fascinating and I was amazed at how much I was drawn into the world of ancient Greece and the people found in these "stories".
There is often a sort of snobbery about the "classics" and so-called "deep" philosophical "works" but when you take each of the books on their own what you have is a collection of really great dialogues that could make great theater never mind great reading.

Hi and welcome bydand1980 to The Book Club I do like the sound of Popular Music From Vittula by Mikael Niemi It would be a interesting read I think and a new style of book to add to the other styles of read we have tried.
So what does everybody thing? Would you all like Popular Music From Vittula to be Book of the Month for March as recommended bydand1980 our new Member?

Thanks for the welcom Toni & Bubbadog
I should warn you now that I have some pretty eclectic and sometimes bizzare reading but I'll try to keep any reccomendations "sensible"!!!
I studied philosophy and just now host a couple of shows on local community radio, that kinda influances a lot of my reading. One of the shows is a theological show on a Sunday afternoon so I do dip in and out of a whole host of theological, philosophical and political books while researching for that.
Occaisionally something might come up in that sort of style which is so good I might reccomend it Chavs by Owen Jones is a pretty good example along with the Plato book I mentioned a couple of posts back.
Apart from "work" books (which I do actually like!) I like reading a lot of sci-fi, nordic stories, comedy, music (especially folk, rock, classical and heavy metal), culture, travel and some of the great classics.
Some of my favourite writers are Robert Heinlein, J.R.R. Tolkien, H.C. Andersen, Daniel Dennet and Snorri Sturluson.0 -
Hi Byland and welcome from me I seem to have missed welcoming you It is interesting to hear other views and interests when it comes to books.0
-
Hiya bookclubbers! I am still in hospital but will order that book when I escape. Wish i was playing with kitties rather than being in here!!0
