Thanks Megrose, I had looked at these and wondered if they were my 'type' of book. I have read Barbara Erskine books and enjoyed those, is it that style at all?
Frogmella, we are going to Anglesey for the week, I am really looking forward to beautiful beaches, log fires (let's face it the sun will be gone by then ) and good company.0 -
That sounds lovely, suzygirl. We are taking the dogs to Bude for October half term for much the same thing! The sun will definitely have gone by then but I predict that it will be sunny for you! Mind you a bit of rain is a good excuse to read. Having said that I have spent much of the last two days reading! I have loads to do but wanted to take advantage of the sun while it is here so took my book into the garden. So lazy but I don't care!!
We've never done Anglesey but it is on our list of places to go. Next Easter we are off to Pembrokeshire because I saw a really dog friendly holiday place suggested on the net and it was too good to pass by!0 -
I've never read any Barbara Erskine, I'm afraid. But, I've just googled her and see that she writes 'timeslip' stories and that is the same as Kate Mosse, so you may well enjoy them. The stories tend to be separate, but linked between past and present. Does that make sense? I don't want to persuade you to read something you would hate - maybe you could try the first one, 'Labyrinth'?
Hope you have a lovely time, anyway!0 -
Megrose, I will try Labyrinth it does sound like something I would enjoy and I was debating it anyway!!! Thanks for the suggestion. I will let you know how I get on.
Frogmella, Pembrokeshire sounds beautiful. It is on my list of places to visit. I have wanted to see Anglesey for ages and a friends cottage became available last minute so we jumped at it. Originally, we were going for October half term. I am sure you will enjoy Bude, the beaches are gorgeous.0 -
You lucky lot!! My OH is finding it hard to find us a cruise or holiday to where we haven't been before for September! We don't want to go to a far away destination but we want sunshine!! It's crazy how we can't find somewhere in this big wide world!!
Has anyone tried any of the three books I chose for July's Book/s Of The Month?0 -
I am going to read the Cath Staincliffe one Blink of an Eye Amanda

'Make a life out of what you have, not what you're missing'0 -
That is the book I chose Great minds think alike!
I have read the latest Karin Slaughter in the meantime which fans of her will enjoy as it expounds on the relationship between Will and Amanda. I gave it a ***
Also read Nameless (forgotten author) it was good, but needlessly gruesome at times, so give it a **
Downloaded lots of books in prepration for my holiday, just need more, as I don't want to run out!!0 -
I've added 'lovereading' site to my computer after frogmella mentioned it in case we need some suggestions! Enjoy reading Blink Of An Eye will look forward to reading your reviews!0
-
Glad to be of service, Amanda.
I want to read Blink of an Eye too but it is not in the library yet. I will get it when I comes available. I hope to finish the book I am reading today, more garden laziness coming on methinks!!
Suzy - we have been to Bude a few times before - you can tell we love it! We actually stay just outside Bude in Marhamchurch. You can walk to Bude along the canal from there and there is a path right across the farm to Widemouth Bay where we take the dogs. I would LOVE to live by the sea. Maybe if I win the lottery......0 -
Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty
As you can tell I have read this book at quite a pace - I blame the weather! Anyway it is about a woman, whose name we don't find out until about page 100, who embarks upon an extra-marital affair. She is a geneticist and meets the man she is to have the affair with when she goes to give evidence at a select committee. (We don't find out his name until nearly the end of the book. It is one of those where she drops names, details in slowly.) The book opens with her in Court, on trial and so we know something bad is going to happen from the start but we don't know what. We then go to the past and follow the story to the point of the beginning of the book - the affair and so on - and then, at the end, we find out the consequences of the court hearing. The descriptions of the "encounters" are pretty racy. The fact that we know something is going to happen keeps you reading to find out what. There were some missed typos (poor proof reading imo) and at times the style is a bit irritating. It is written from the woman's point of view and she refers to her affair man as "you" throughout.
However I enjoyed it and award ***/****

Toni xxx0 -
Beware, Toni, you will soon have too many books to read!! Another day in the garden for me I think!0
-
I have to say these books that chop and change from past to present really annoy me! It's the same with movies, it drives me crazy!! I prefer a book or movie to be straight forward no weaving. There you go got it's off my chest!! Now back to the conservatory to carry on reading! Been evicted from my lounge because his lord ship is watching The Ashes!! Don't understand myself!!0
-
Another afternoon planned lazing in the conservatory with my kindle I thinks!!0

Random acts of heroic love by Danny Scheinmann
This is s story of two men in two different times.
Leo's girlfriend, Elini is killed in a bus crash while they are travelling in South America. Leo struggles with her death and falls apart a bit really. His part of the story is in the early 90s and follows Leo through the year immediately after her death.
Moritz's story is set during WWI. He falls in love with Lotte but has to go to war. The main part of his story is his long walk across most of Europe back to her.
Both stories are about love and loss.
It was a good book. Tugged a few heartstrings. ***/****
I have the new Stephen King waiting at the library, it is another of his crime books.

Your right Toni, anything else is too tiring! The only thing you can do is read! Really enjoying Guess who I pulled last night? by Nikki Ashton it's an easy book to read and has kept me interested a real ladies book! My OH was in a can't be ar**d to cook mood last night because of the heat and saultered off to KFC! They do ice cream sundaes now!!0

Joyland by Stephen King
This is Stephen King's second book published by "hard case crime". It is a mystery/thriller rather than horror, although. to be honest, he has been leaning that way more in his usual books too. It was about Devin who went to work at Joyland, an amusement park, one summer holiday. He is told that the haunted house ride is indeed haunted and this sparks his interest. The story is mostly about his summer and getting over his first real girlfriend who has dumped him. I enjoyed it and the ending when you find out who is the haunted house killer is gripping. So ****/*****
I am now going to read Kiss me first by Lottie Moggach.
