Suzygirl - could I ask you how similar the other Kate Morton's were. I really enjoyed the botm and thought about reading more but didn't want to if they were essentially the same story just with different characters! I know, I know!!

I gave up on my historical fiction read. First book I have abandoned for years! I'm not sure if it was a bad book or if my head was too "busy" for me to concentrate properly. To be fair I have felt a bit more fraught having gone back to work! But I have picked up The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern off the library shelf and have read over 200 hundred pages since Wednesday so it probably was the book!

I have also picked up The new Maggie O'Farrell - Instructions for a heatwave and I need to read that sharpish as it has a loooong waiting list!

    I'm bereft. :(

    I'm lost

    I'm hungry for more :o

I've just finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and I don't know what to do with myself.

This story is told through three wonderfully real female characters; Minny, Aibileen and Miss Skeeter. The location is Jackson, Mississippi and it's the early 1960s and all about the lives of black people and their white employers. It was in parts funny, emotional and shocking that people were treated as they were. It is a wonderful, wonderful book and as you may have gathered I’m so sorry to have finished it.

    5*s+

    Love, Legs x

I really enjoyed the book Legs, it was such an eye opener.

Frogmella, I didn't find the other books similar in the same way. They are the same in that each one goes back in time to tell a secret, but also still different. I think that book is the best though, not sure if that is because its the first of hers you read? If you know what I mean? Haven't helped much, sorry

Thanks, Suzy! That does help I think. I will probably wait awhile to read another of hers so that the memory of this will have faded a bit!

Oh yes, The Help. It was a good book. I was amazed at how recently people were treated so awfully just because of the colour of their skin. A very good book. Have you watched the film? That was a good book to film translation.

No, I haven't seen the film. I always prefer to read the book or watch the film as the film always spoils a book in my opinion. Obviously the 'film cast selection committee' can't seed inside my mind to know what the characters should look like.

Just to add I've read Kate Morton's The House at Riverton. It was good and I enjoyed it but I agree with Suzy that The Forgotten Garden has the edge but House at Riverton is still enjoyable. I've downloaded Distant Hours (another Kate Morton) but that's on my TBR pile at the moment.

Thanks for more advice! I watched the film post book reading, I nearly always read before I watch, and it was good. But I know what you mean about casts not matching what they "should" look like!

Sorry to hear about your bug, bubba. Hope you feel better soon.

I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I have really enjoyed this book. It is about two children brought up by two different magical men. The children are intended to take part in a competition that these men have devised over the years. The form that the competition will take is not revealed to the two children, a boy and a girl, neither is their opponent. The competition ends up taking place in The Night Circus, once they are grown up.
There is a love story thrown in to boot, rather Romeo and Juliet, and the stories of all the acts within the circus are good too.
    I award *****

I now have to read the latest Maggie O'Farrell before collecting the BOTM! Best get going, eh?

    Hiya all
I am waiting for The White Princess by Phillipa Gregory to come out as I have most of her books and am an avid reader as there is not much else I can do which I enjoy. I bought myself a Kindle Paperlight as I am unable to read paperbacks as the books need to be flat but I much prefer books. I am now able to download all the paperbacks which I find interesting and have not been able to buy. Historical novels are my favourites.
I am looking forward to The White Queen when it comes out on DVD although I have a while to wait as it will be televised from Sunday the 16th. I have all those books and the DVD will be worth having.

Loved the pictures!! Thank you Toni, such a shame that poor kitten was left pregnant to fend for herself! People can be so cruel. Is she going to be a permanent member of your family?
Enjoy your weekend and happy reading everyone!!

Just finished Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell

I have read all of this author's books and I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as previous ones. It is set in London during the heatwave of 1976. Gretta's husband, Robert pops out to buy the paper and doesn't come home. This results in the bringing together of their three children to try and find him.
The real story is the one between the three kids. There is a son who is having his own problems in his marriage, the elder daughter who has been divorced (big deal in Catholic Irish family) and has issues in her new relationship and the youngest daughter who is blatantly dyslexic and has moved to New York.

I didn't hate it, it just didn't really grab me. I am only going to give ***

I am off to begin the BOTM now.

Watch Over Me by Daniela Sacredoti

The story of Eilidh (pronounced Aylee) a woman who yearned for a baby, got pregnant and then miscarried. A love story which I felt could have been serialised in a magazine. An easy enough book to read but very predictable .........a 'nice' story.

I only give it 3* because there were no surprises.

Ah, Toni! I finished it this afternoon. I, obviously, won't review yet. Please remind me when it is time? I did race through it so must have liked it! Sometimes I wasn't totally sure I believed in the main character. I will explain why later!!

I think I will now start Horns by Joe Hill who happens to be Stephen King's son. He has a new one out that got rave reviews so thought I would read one of his earlier ones. Some new Stephen Kings coming soon/now too! :D

Linda - that book does sound like a post op book to me too! Or one for on the beach with a pina colada? yum!
