I had a look for some more "uplifting" books that are cheap on kindle and that I can get from library and failed!! I did try though!

I just finished Kiss me first by Lottie Moggach

This book had a novel premise - Leila is a geeky teenager - likes playing world of warcraft etc - who is very naive and innocent. She joins an internet forum set up for debate and is approached by the founder, Adrian, to undertake a special project. Essentially Tess is a 30 something manic depressive who wants to commit suicide but without upsetting all her friends and family. So the plan is that she pretends to emigrate leaving Leila to impersonate her online.
Obviously it all goes pear shaped.
I quite enjoyed it. Didn't absolutely grip me so *** I think.

Frogmella - that book looked interesting......

Legs I will pass on your cuppa and love to Cris this very evening ;)

I was wondering seeing a few of you are going on your holly-wogs if for August's Book Of The Month we have a free-pass where you get to read whatever book you fancy and review it so there would be a good selection of different book reviews for everyone to see.
    What do you all think?.....

The crying tree by Naseem Rakha

I had wanted to read this book years ago but never did and then it was there on the shelf in the library a couple of weeks ago so I picked it up. I am glad I did.
It is about a family in Oregon. The son, Shep, is killed in a burglary gone wrong when he is 15. His mom, Irene, falls apart. The boy who did it, Daniel, gets the death sentence. To start with the boo is set "then" and "now". In as much as the back story to the murder and the immediate aftermath are told alongside what is happening now, 19 years later when the death warrant finally appears.
In the time between the sentence and the warrant Irene has written to Daniel and forgiven him.
Her family don't understand her decisions but then the Dad seems to have his own secrets.
I thought it was a really good book. There are parts focussing on the prison superintendent and the effect all of this has on him, as well as some of his back story too. The effect of the murder on the whole family - Mom, Dad and Sister is well told too. You feel for all of them, although I felt less sympathy for the dad if I am honest.
It makes you think about the actuality of the death penalty too.
Enjoyed it and read it fast so ****/*****

I loved Philadelphia too, Amanda. The film that is! Never read the book.

Guess Who I Pulled Last Night byNikki Aston

The Story is about 3 friends and is very much like Sex in the City but in Manchester! It's tells the story of their lives, the up's and the downs and makes you laugh and occasionally feel sorry for them. It's an uplifting book that makes you think I've been their in parts. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to all the ladies especially if you are a Sex in the city fan! A good holiday read!

I read it Toni! My review is on the last page I think. It was OK. Probably not as gripping as Gone Girl for me.

I've just ordered loads from the library, waiting to see what arrives first. Put quite a few thrillers on the list.

I have started talking to the dead by Harry Bingham Quite good so far but the copy I have smells like an ashtray. Yuck!

Went to the cricket at Old Trafford yesterday. Couldn't have done that pre-op! Tired today but it was a looong day so allowed!

Will be back with a review soon.

    Philadelphia by Christopher Davis

I knew I would read this book quickly, and I did thanks to flare up keeping me up all night! If you haven't seen the film. Andy is a lawyer and has AIDS he decided to not tell his bosses. When he's health goes down hill and a important case file goes missing that Andy was working on his bosses fire him saying it was due to his incompetence, or was it due to his illness? Andy decides to take the firm to court for wrongful dismissal but nearly all of the other law firms are not willing to take on a huge law firm until he asks Joe. The story shows how hard discrimination in a large firm can be and how hard it is to fight for your rights and your illness. The book is a lot more in depth than the film It's still an amazing book to read even 2nd time round. I sobbed when it came to the court (I sob my heart out when watching the film even though I've watched it 12 times!) I do wholly recommend this book even if you haven't seen the film. It touches you and makes you feel your there with them. Recommend you have a box of tissues handy!!

Talking to the dead by Harry Bingham
This is a cop thriller type with the main character being DC Fiona Griffiths who is a bit "odd". She had a breakdown when she was late teens. The gist of the story is about prostitutes getting murdered, so usual stuff really. I quite enjoyed it, except the **** smell of the actual book, and I read it quickly. I imagine I will read the next in the series too so I give ***/****.

Yes, Toni, I thought maybe it was just me but it certainly wasn't gripping. Not bad but not great!

Started that Shatter by Michael Robotham that was mentioned on here ages ago. I still have a nagging feeling that I have read it before! But we'll see!

Good books really do help when the pain is bad - they do a great job of distracting me anyway!
