Morning dorcas, here's a honey chew just for you. How are things today - off to see Mr Handsome if my memory serves me right. I think it's time you stopped putting dirt in your wound just to create a reason for seeing him - you are more sophisticated than that, surely! Seriously Iris, I wish you well, I hope it's healing and that you are feeling well. Your Diabolical Damsel.

How did you get on today, Iris?

    And how are you Cris?

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Iris

Am on tenterhooks here wondering how you got on.. !
    Hope it was good news.

What antibiotics have you been on Iris? I have just been prescribed erythromycin 500 mgs every 6 hours (I might have an infection in my toe so GP is nipping it in the bud)..

    Hi everyone :D

    just back from hossie
....thought I had a morning appointment and got ready to leave at 8am this morn...lucky I checked the card before I left and saw it was 2:20pm and not 9:40..duh!...

Ortho said he is 'happier' than he was on Friday with Wally's wound ...but said we're not 'out of the woods' yet. Wound still open though agreed that redness def. improved. Took yet more blood.
He's not happy that the GP didn't have the swab results back (done last Wed) and chased GP up while I was there. Ortho will phone me if need be but in any case wants keep a close eye so I'm back on Friday again. (that's without even having to rub dirt in the wound too DD :lol::lol: )
handsome ortho said he had been very worried about me...and I said 'so was I' !!
so I'm taking from all of that that wally n me are on the right road....quite fond of him now so want to keep him

Cris was with me again... her internet's playing up today but hoping to be back on later. she's a real star. :!: :D I've polished up her POOP award (Pigeon Of Outstanding Perseverance)...she's sure earned it.....

    love to all,

    Iris xx

Some good news at least then, dorcas. The infection is clearing - (shame! no more Dr Kildaire!) but that means your wrist is safe! It's just as well you checked your appointment time - it's so easy to lose track! DD

Hi Iris, Well they are keeping a good eye on you which is really good.

I think it was Tony Hancock who had the great line about them taking so much blood!!! Showing my age now

Things are finally looking up for you. Fingers and everything eles crossed. Hope Friday brings more good news.

Yes I second Cris's award.

    Iris,
Sounds like the antibiotics are winning the fight. You must be beginning to resemble a pin cushion - have you much blood left?! Not really the GP's fault he hadn't received the results back ... though perhaps he could have been more proactive in chasing them up. Is Wally still on total rest?

Hi Cris, nuisance that about the internet ... when ours is down I feel cut off, rather like I have lost the bush-telegraph!!

Slowly and surely you'll get there Iris. Are you still taking antibiotics? how long for I wonder. Hope you're doing all the other things which will help your healing, you know, little chocolate or cake treats etc....... :D It's good that you've got a Consultant who obviously cares and has only your best interests at heart. Cautiously (sp) optimistic. :)
Well done Cris for always being there, big hugs, rita

Hi all :D and thanks Toni for update on our Cris!

off the antibiotics now (gulp!) but wally still on complete rest and have to keep up the inodine and sterile dressings until wound is dry.

fingers still crossed about outcome but today that bit of the wound looks as though it's closing so I really do hope that I've been lucky and it's been a localised / controlled infection.

the hand therapist phoned me today ..she was very reassuring..said not to worry about the physio setback.. they will work with me on getting wally moving again once ortho gives the all clear.
feeling more confident again and have to say wally wrist is less painful week on week!

Cris...have saved you some of DD's honey chews and Rita's chocs for when you fly back after your horrid weather lifts.

Less pain is a good thing! I hope all is well today - are you seeing Dr Kildaire again soon, or is he happy with you? I'm sure you've posted about that but I can't remember! DD

Nah. Had meth yesterday as they'd brewed it for me, and feel lousy today but only 'cos I think I'm flaring. Temper uncertain, I feel very tired and pain levels have shot up in the past 24 hours. I reduced the pred too from Monday, now on 12.5mg per day, and that hasn't helped. Grrrrrrrrr. One does get tired of this merry-go-round of misery. Holiday? What holiday? On the plus side, at least this didn't happen on holiday! (There is ALWAYS a plus side.) Diabolic.

Hi Iris, they must think the infection has gone altogether if they have stopped the antibiotics .. if they thought there was even a mild chance of it still being there somewhere - they would have left you on them.
fingers still crossed about outcome but today that bit of the wound looks as though it's closing so I really do hope that I've been lucky and it's been a localised / controlled infection.

Is someone coming in to the dressings?

The hand therapist sounds fab. It is a shame Wally has to rest, you'll no doubt have to work that bit harder to get him back on track movement wise ... but sounds like you'll have plenty of support and along with your determination you and Wally will get there.

Great that the pain is improving all the time, I was worried it might be worse due to the wound.

    Speedy

Thanks Toni for letting us know why Cris hasn't been about. Say hi to her for me.

Oh DD that don't sound good :( .

please rest up today give your body time to recover from your meth. won't do for you to be racing about..

Speedy...that's what I thought too so another reason I feel it's been localised although ortho still wouldn't commit.

He wasn't too happy about the steroid IM at that stage post-op so that's worth knowing for the future. He also questioned why I'd been on Mtx as he would have instructed me to stop it pre-op and for a period post op? I told him that I did ask about that at my pre op assessment and was told it was OK. different views again eh?

hope you are coping with the school hols..has S got clubs he goes to?

    Irisxxx

ps..forgot to say..I've not once had any community follow up post op or for the wound dressings which haven't been easy to do one handed...

They all need to get their act together really don't they?! Did you give up Mtx before TWF op last time?

S breaks up next Friday - can't wait to have a break from the early get-ups. No Special Olympics in hols, we will still go to youth club, in on a scheme for one week - but till last week .... (did try for a better week!)

That's ridiculous. Your discharge team or GP can arrange this. I think the district nurse could be doing this. Why don't you make bit of fuss - something to do whilst resting Wally- this is the sort of thing the district nurse should be doing!!

Oh dorcas, how awkward and how strange that they didn't think of this. I suppose you are used to doing it now but why not ask if you can get some help? DD

I came off ant tnf for the TWF last year but stayed on the Mtx...weird isn't it?

I think its too late to make a fuss about the wound dressing ... last Wed when I panicked at seeing the wound open and **** and went to the GP surgery.......... the nurse took a swab and dressed the wound and gave me the antibi script ....then just gave me the dressings to do at home.
the ortho nurse did the same....just handed me the inodine and sterile dressings to do daily...

I must have looked competent !! ha ha!!

speedy..hope the hols aren't too demanding on you... maybe friends will help out too?? at least you'll not have to be up at the crack of dawn! is S a good sleeper then?

    DD don't think I'd want/ need a nurse coming in now. x

More than likely, yes!! My friends say that is often why I don't get help ...

Summer hols usually tricky - most friends away on hols etc S sleeps well as long as I wear him out sufficiently ... he does wake early, but likes a lie in these days.

    Hi Iris

It is a dilemma about the methotrexate and the IM steriods...

I expected to have to stop the mtx for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after my THR, but when I saw the consultant at my first referral he said there was research now which showed that RA patients do better if they stay ON the mtx - so I stayed on it.

I also have a dilemma about the big steriod jabs.. I had 2 when I was first diagnosed and they didn't work at all so I've not bothered since. My rheumy nurse has offered them to me a couple of times this year, but also told me that my consultant didn't think much of them!! I have great respect for my consultant - she is a good 'all round physician' - she doesn't just 'see' the rheumalogical aspects of a person ....

Glad to hear that things are continuing to settle down and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's update..
