Hi Iris
Glad to hear that your appointment went well and you were the centre of attention! Sounds like things are definitely on the 'up' for you now - don't go doing too much though will you?
Didn't realise staph aureus could lie dormant .. nasty bug..
You could do with boosting your immune system (couldn't we all!!). Any ideas about how to do that, Iris? I've been thinking about
Manuka honey, which apparently has natural antibacterial properties (I think there has been some 'proper' research done on it)...
Hope you have a relaxing evening - you shoudl sleep tonight all being well..
Marion x0 -
thanks Marion...
I've heard too about manuka honey and know that honey generally has antibacterial properties...didn't they use it directly on wounds at one time?
I'm not a lover of honey but can tolerate it in tea! so might give that a go.
yes..will try to be sensible and not overdo it...just so happy to have reached this stage!

Hi Iris,
I am really glad they are pleased with you and Wally and hopefully it will never come back....... I wonder could it be a tail back from the infected arthritis?
Hey have some more cream Its good stuff and the very best comfort food though it also makes you feel sick if you have too much.... not that I would know that one
I love the notion of Hope and a glass..... sorry she put it all over the table..... least she got off the escalator.....
Its good in a way they have all come in and seen you though, they are doing the wrists more now a days, I hope all your clothing was all on the right way round today?
I am so pleased you got the splint off and you know what your going to be fine now
Oh my leg still a bit yucky..... its got a big infection but its smaller than the drawn line at the top but bigger at the bottom and its not banging do much so its responding.
love ((( )))'s, greens, chew sicks and more cream (do guinea pigs eat cream? Well this one does ) Cris xxx0 -
Well Iris all I can say is that I am so glad things have turned around at last. They will be keeping a very close eye on you so that is reassuring.
Splint free will be good must be like taking off the 18 hr corset!! Not that we would know about that. Well before our time.

Hi Iris,
it sounds like you and Wally have survived the blip though the whole thing about the bug lying dormant is a nuisance. Marion mentioned boosting your immune system - you need zinc for that ... you can get tablets or just eat food rich in zinc .. only foods I can think of off top of my head are pecan nuts, shellfish and oysters!!
I suppose since you are a guinea pig, no one really knows how much movement you will get in Wally - but with your grit and determination I'm sure you will surprise them all - especially when the hand therapist digs out her pre-op stats again after a few weeks of catch up physio.
Wally might not be as keen to give up his splint as you are, so bit by bit - over doing it is so easy.
Nice to have two drop dead gorgeous surgeons looking out for you and Wally ... some people get all the luck! I ended up with Mr TEDS-fetish !!
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Speedy,
your not still having o wear them re you   I'd take em off and only ware them for your next appointment if i was yo..... Hope you and S are ok? ((( ))) Cris xx0 -
Hi Cris, speedy, ironic. xxx
Hey ironic....18hr girdles?...now that is going back a bit. :!: will have to ask my 'much older' sis about that one. playtex was it ?
speedy...surely you're not still wearing the Teds???
gawd..between girdles, white 'stockings' and inside out clothes we arther gals sure do know how to impress.....not.
cris..that spur sounds awfully painful you sure you're getting the right treatment? did the doc take a swab to see what 'bug' is there? don't let it go on too long before you go back an see him. :?:
I wonder if there's anything in what you've said about the previous septic joint...it was this wally wrist that had it .mmm :?
I've already had wally out for some fresh air ...couldn't wait!
am seeing the hand therapist on Friday..phoned her as soon as I got out hossie to make the appointment!

Hi Iris
Good to hear all went so well and you will be splint free soon
hoorah!!!
Did the consultant have ANY idea how much him bringing all those nosey people in affected my view????
For heavens' sake!!! One nearly trod on me and Hope!
Still at least all is well eh?
Yes the man came and had to borrow my glasses as he forgot his well the case was empty! Blimey they cost a bit though
Having my hair done so hope to catch you later.
Love
Toni xx0 -
OF COURSE I'M NOT WEARING THE TEDS!!!
And I won't wear them to the appointment either, though might carry them in my bag to tease the consultant with.
Cris, that wound and infection sounds nasty, hope it clears up quick.

Hello dorcas, it all sounds pretty good to me! How lovely of Dr K to pop his head round the door - you have obviously made an impression, properly dressed or not!
Zinc tablets are a good idea but the problem we have is that our immune system is 'dialled down' to prevent flares. If you boost it, flares come back. It really is tightrope walking on a grand scale.
I hope the recovery continues apace and that wally appreciates all the care and attention he has been shown by respondiong to your wishes and commands, limited tho they might be by the nature of the op you have had. It's a long old recovery road that you are on at the mo, but now, hopefully, it's full steam ahead! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hi Iris, I'm delighted to hear you've got more good news and can loose the splint. Sounds like you're well on your way now. Sounds like you are a bit of a celebrity at the hospital. Big hugs, rita0

Morning dorcas, I hope all is well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Iris,
I hope your not over doing it there now you can? Wally must feel so much better being out of his prison
I was lucky with the leg, good old standard strepti Responds well to Augmentin but itching like hell now till you rub it hen it reminds me it can hurt
Hope you have a good day and I must go show willing and get to the sale...... Greens and ((( ))) Cris xxx0 -
Morning and thanks again everyone.:D
I had wally out of the splint quite a lot yesterday...feels great to be 'free' but takes a bit of concentrating and getting used to as I keep trying to use the hand!
I get a very quick 'reminder' from wally that he's not ready for major 'use' yet. so am learning to be careful with him as I go along...
wrist is very stiff but finger movements and grip seem really good, but sticking to lifting / holding/ moving very light things...tea towel, newspaper, 'scrunchie' in the shower...that sort of thing...also typing a little.
wound not completely healed yet..so keeping a weather eye on that!
pain? what pain?....at seven weeks post op it is that good already compared to how excruciatingly painful the wrist was pre-op. Wally best described as 'aching' rather than anything else and I get some 'spiky' pain up in the hand occasionally...but what a difference!
off to hand therapy tomorrow...so will be interesting to see what Mandy thinks (not seen her for three weeks) and if she has received the 'new instructions' through from my ortho. guess wally won't like what'll be expected of him...and I expect an increase in the aching, but I'm keen to make progress.
I'm very conscious of the fact that my ortho said that at 12 weeks post op wally's movement will be 'as good as it's going to be'. I'm also realistic and know the infection has been a set back.
thanks again for all your encouragement(s).
Iris xx0 -
That sounds good - Free Wally! so to speak. Keep concentrating hun, it must be difficult NOT to do things instinctively and you don't need another setback. I think you have coped/are coping remarkably well. I hope you have a good day. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

thanks damsel hope you have a good day too....at least you don't have the meth stabbing today :!:
Iris xx0 -
I am seriously at odds with the world - won't be about much today methinks! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Iris,
I think it has to be 12 weeks plus 3 weeks ... for Wally to be reaching his short term goals ... I think the rate of progress slows after this time, but doesn't stop ... (I hope so, my hip still has room for progress.) No wonder Wally is stiff - think how stiff other joints can be just after a night in bed, let alone weeks in a splint!
It is hard to remember what to attempt/not attempt when there is no pain to remind you in the first place ... It is great to be free of the bad pain, but then of course we want more movement ...
The healing is a nuisance though isn't it? Would not any of the dressings they use on ulcers help the last bit to knit together a bit quicker? Is there no specialist in stubborn wounds?!
Cris - itching is a good sign isn't it? I hope that cockeral is seriously grovelling!!
DD - Sorry you are still not having a good time of it.

Oh Iris
it sounds great - so much less pain, but I imagine you have to think a lot....
not to move this way - or that....not to pick this up...even to give Wally things to 'do' which practise, but don't do harm
Glad Cris got on here thsi morning I think her connection had been playing up again.
Have a good day
Love
Toni xx0 -
Hi Iris
So pleased to hear that your wrist pain has more or less disappeared..
Perhaps you can discount the 2 weeks when you had the infection and therefore regard yourself as 5 weeks post op now? - therefore you have another 7 weeks to reach the 'as good as it gets' time??
Looking forward to hearing how you get on with the hand physio.
Marion x0 -
Hi Iris,
That's good that you can use Wally a little bit. All helps with the fight back. Good luck with your appt tomorrow. I hope Wally responds better than you think.
Lv, Ix0 -
Hi Iris,
Fingers crossed it goes well tomorrow, I recons you may be surprised at how pleased she is at your progress. Hope you have had a reasonable day?
Sale was quiet again today...... there isn't a lot of confidence about I guess......... Did get you some turnips, greens, grass and chew-sticks as well as a bucket of Hopes (not easy to squash her in a bucket) and ((( )))'s Cris xxx
Hi Speedy,
i think itchy is a good sign especially as the red area in now down under an inch. The lad isn't groveling indeed he almost did it again... its over food and he better watch out cus he used to be so nice..... I need to get faster and must look out for Marion's idea of a suit of armour xx0 -
Hi all
DD... hope your 'back in tune' with the world tonight (you'll always be in tune with us) and feeling better. :?:
speedy ... maybe I could be 'allowed' another 2 or 3 weeks before measuring wally's progress or as marion suggests discount 2 of them!. thanks too for thinking about wound dressings...but I really don't need them now...it's almost closed. hope you're managing the hols and been able to have those walks with S.?
Toni..you're spot on about having to 'think' before I use Wally and how and what to try without doing harm or 'overdoing' it. Today I managed to button my blouse using wally which was great. Seven weeks using one hand and a buttonholer is very frustrating, so managing this small task feel like a major achievement.
how's the bursitis?
Marion..I am delighted and surprised to be almost pain free with wally...he does ache but that's nothing to moan about and I'm thinking the aching will disappear too in time.
hope your toe is getting better?
Ironic ..it does feel like a fight back and I wonder what new exercises will be introduced tomorrow by hand therapy.
how are you doing? how's your arther?
Cris...I did get all the top ups of greens an turnips and chews, thanks! Hope isn't looking very happy with the squashing...you crushed her laura ashley best dress and mussed up her 'lovely' hairdo :!:
keep an eye on me boyo...an get the pot ready if he dares spring an attack on you again. (glad the leg is getting better)
what about shin guards......you could wear them on either the front or the back of your legs :?:
see you all tomorrow...sleep well.
