Hi Marion, yes so was I!
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Cris,
hope you didn't have to wait to long and minor injuries and they got you patched up ok.

On some days getting dressed is a highly over-rated activity, and completely un-necessary. DD (who is shedding layers as she types and donning a nightie.)Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hello dorcas, I hope all is welll today. Good luck with getting dressed! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hello peeps,
Yes everyone....I do have my T shirt on the right way round and not inside out today even though I had to concentrate really really hard to do it who said I couldn't learn :?:
Glad to see you back Cris you were missed! I have a new found admiration for Hope as she was so well dressed on Friday and has definitely earned her 'Plus' points (and carrot cake).clever gal.
Wally is behaving and the wound looks great now....just the one area left to heal. The bug was staphylococcus aureus ...sensitive to flucloxacillin and erythromycin (so I was told this morn) so my treatment was spot on.
So...hopefully, tomorrow, consultant will be pleased and let me get started back with physio....I'm also hoping he'll agree to wally getting freed from the splint....at least some of the time, I'm post op 7weeks today!
I've started using the wally hand now for holding light weight things and it feels fine. also been able to use the hand a little in the shower which makes such a difference.
thanks to all for helping me through the 'blip'...

Hi Iris
It's really great to hear that everything is settling down nicely again.. whew - that has been a worrying 10 days for us, never mind you!!!
When do you think you will be returnign to work?
Marion0 -
Hi Iris,
it's great Wally is pulling his weight a bit more (!) - holding light things and helping out in the shower - and that the wound is nearly healed. Spending some more time out of the splint and also getting back to physio would be great, wouldn't it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as Wally might find that a bit a tricky.

Hi Marion
Thanks
I took 'voluntary' early retirement at end of March this year. (long, long story, told on the 'Working' forum... )
I applied for ESA though just to keep up my insurance stamp contributions until I reach my proper retiral age. Ludicrously I was summoned by jobcentreplus to attend a 'Pathways to Work' interview last week   so I went along to see what work they could offer someone 6weeks post op. :!: The woman took one look and spent less than ten minutes interviewing me and talking about her own retirement in September.
..although she said I should expect to be sent for a medical. Stuff and nonsense. :?
I read on speedy's thread that you are hoping to go back to work in 2 weeks:shock: D'you think that the orthos will agree with that when they see you on the 10th? What kind of work do you do... and are your employers being supportive?
(being nosey now, sorry )
Iris x
ps...sorry speedy..didn't see you there. thanks I know I'll have to go easy but keen to make the best of this op. xxx
what are your plans about returning to work? x0 -
Hi Iris,
whole ESA thing sounds a joke...
I'm not planning on returning to work just yet - especially as boss in his wisdom has put me in with 5 to 6 year olds - tiny chairs and lots of sitting on the floor .... DURR. Unless you are on level with their little faces - there is no way in.
Will have to ring disability person at jobcentre in early Sept etc to kick start things re comfy chair (right height and with arms etc) for me to sit on etc. Tempted to take my upstairs trolley into work with me - but OT might come up with something better.
I'm missing the mental stimulation etc now, but physically am just not ready.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Iris
Oh - didn't realise you had retired early..
The bureaucracy is crazy!!
Yes, my employers have been very supportive. I work in a University. I've actually been doing a lot of work from home over the last few months so have kept on top of things. We have a very strong/supportive Disability Support Unit and Occupational Health Team, which I'm grateful for. I'll do a phased return initially and then take a day a week off as holiday after that if I need to rest up..
Before I went off I was on two sticks and struggled to walk to the loo - so my colleagues will notice a big difference when they see me on one crutch or even (I hope)crutchless!! I know my hands will take a bashing when I first go back though - so will have to get some new daytime splints as my others have been chewed up (by Poppy of course) whilst I've been off.
Best wishes

Hi Iris,
Hopely said she finds getting dressed is all she can do well Her hairstyles are a bit iffy but then since she does mine its only right I return the favour
I am so relived the wound is healing You must have been worried sick cus I know we have been.
What time are we off tomorrow? Hope is going to wear her very best flowery patterned dress (bit Laura Ashly to be honest) and I will do my up ,most to get her into the r best manners and will shut up now.....
Hey I really hope you will be able to have the physio again and I am sure with your determination will mean the knock back of the wound will not hold your recovery back at all. ((((( ))))) and a ton of greens, turnips, lettuce, dandelions and Hawthorne if you want it Cris xxx0 -
Hi Iris
It would be great if you can resume the physio yes it would
Are we odd again tomorrow??
What time - need to set my alarm.....
Hope it also wearing a lace shawl Cris - she made me - yes ME!!! Iron it for her.
5 days and I will see you Cris0 -
Hi Iris, I'm delighted to hear you so upbeat and doing so well. Best of luck tomorrow. Don't be overdoing things now but knowing you you're itching to get going. Big hugs, rita

Hi speedy, marion, cris and toni!
marion..it's great to read of an employer who is so supportive and that you have such a forward thinking Dis. Ability Advisor and OT...it will definitely ease your return to work.
There are many employers who could benefit from that model.
will watch for your updates marion..may be you should start a thread on this :?:
Does Poppy likes the wooden crutches..or is it just the padding on the handles?
speedy.. am glad you're going to enlist the DEA in getting the right support, chair etc before you go back to work.
.........I know exactly what you mean about missing/ needing the mental stimulation. although I'm 'retired' I'll be looking for some voluntary work and would like to learn German!
cris.. I'm sure hopely will look just gorgeous in her laura ashley print..and if we offer her more bribes (cake, shortbread, criachan (wonderful sweet made of oats, honey, cream, raspberries with a hint of whisky) may be she'll agree to come off the escalator first time?
the haircuts will match my own wurzel gummidge styling
toni.. quote 'are we odd again tomorrow'
Oh yes...we sure are!!!
I can't believe YOU ironed  even if it was for the baaaa dly behaved hopely!
Appointment is 10 of the clock. got my biggest pockets ready and gum drops and peppermint creams for the journey.
what a motley crew we are for sure!

Hi Iris
Hope all goes well tomorrow.. looking forward to your next update.
It's my hand splints that Poppy has chewed - she likes the velcro strips! I'm expecting my hands to hurt more when I go back to work because I'll be using the pc more and also writing... anyway, will just take each day as it comes..
Learning German - hey - that will be really good. I did a year's intensive Italian course a few years ago and really enjoyed it ..
Best wishes

Hi Iris
Sorry to have neglected this thread but really glad to see Wally behaving a little better now after the poorly spell. Hope all goes well tomorrow and you feel able to continue with the physio again soon, you really have done well in a relatively short time though am sure it feels longer to you. I will nip off for a tea break early to be in your pocket on time and will look in for an update tomorrow.
take care (((( ))))

Hi Marion, Speedy, Chris, Toni, Damsel, Cris and Ironic
Saw my consultant surgeon this morning; his words to me were ' I hear you've been having a bad time with a wound infection...I'm glad I wasn't here to worry about you..... you caused my registrar several sleepless nights!.'
He then asked my permission to bring in an assortment of hospital peeps (docs, Ots & physios) so that they could sit in on the appointment as they had not seen a wrist replacement patient.
He explained the op to them, showed them the xrays and then examined Wally...who of course was reluctant to move. He said that he's not concerned at the lack of movement given the infection etc...and that I should not expect to achieve a huge range of movement as the op's main aim is reduction in pain and to give me some flexibility (which I already knew). He will write to my hand therapist with new instructions on what he now wants her to do.
He said that I need to be aware the staph aureus bug can lie dormant and return with a vengeance, so to keep an eye on the wrist for signs of infection, swelling, redness etc . Took more bloods too and will contact me if they are concerned about the results.
Best of all....Wally can now be free of the splint and I can start to use it more. I've to take it in stages until after a week or two I don't need to wear the splint at all! yipee!!! result.
thanks all for your good wishes that I took with me this morn..and your company in the hossie...got a bit crowded in there!
Marion... hope Poppy is being weaned away from your splints  and that your hands don't suffer too much on your return to work. do you have gel rests? ergonomic keyboard etc? :!:
Chris ..no need to apologise for not being around :!: :? you had good cause and I'm just glad to see you posting again.
Ironic..pity can't claim air miles for all this toing and froing
Toni..I love the 'new you'..not nasty at all..just ever so slightly rude. did the 'man' turn up?
Speedy..I need to be doing something but not sure what yet  will look around after a few more weeks to see what vol. work there is here.
Damsel..you'll be pleased to know Dr Kildare did pop his head round the door when I was in..I remembered my manners and thanked him for 'looking after me' so well. no mention of inside out clothes.
Cris..hope your tin cans are still holding up. how's that spur? is it healing? thanks for the dandelions and I don't mind sharing with Toni Lovvveddd clotted cream..Yumm!!
Glad Hope enjoyed the cranachan.....served in a glass of course for some'one' of her refinement and dress sense.
love to all
