Bioluminescence - I read The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson the first summer my back went when I was in constant, severe nerve pain. It is a fantasy book but the fact that the main character was a very bad burns victim with awful pain resonated with me at the time. It was a good book as I recall.

I can't think of any books with ill people as the main characters really. Although a few of us read Me before you by jojo moyes about a quadraplegic man and his carer. It's a weepy!

There is a book of the month. This month is Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden.

Generally we read the book of the month as well as other books and write a brief review on here. We tend to put the title and author in bold and then put a 5* rating at the end. I'm sure Bubba will be along to give you any hints and tips you might need.

    Welcome to the book club!

Hi Bioluminescence & Bertiebudgie11 and welcome to The Book Club sorry didn't get back to you yesterday but I couldn't get on to the site for some reason! Well the general idea of The Book Club is so members can read books and review them and we have a Book of the Month that we suggest for all members to read and broaden their tastes of book choice. I also ask members when they have read a book to review it as the lovely frogmella explained, and she explained The Book Club beautifully and better than I did!! Welcome!!

Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer. *****

Read this a few times now, and it is a true classic which we should all read ( in my opinion anyhow!) lol

Thanks frogmella and bubbadog for the kind welcome and explaining how it all works here on the book club forum.

    Hi all.

) but do you know any good books where the character or author has an illness or chronic pain or even arthritis? Preferably fiction, can be non fiction (but I don't mean a scientific guide to understanding physical effects of arthritis and medication).

Lincoln Rhymes novels by Jeffrey Deaver??? He is a wheelchair user and also his GF has RA I think it's him anyway

Tis lovely to welcome you and Bertiebudgie to the book club :)

    love

I'm not sure if this has come up (sorry, I don't have time to go through 40 pages today :P) but do you know any good books where the character or author has an illness or chronic pain or even arthritis? Preferably fiction, can be non fiction (but I don't mean a scientific guide to understanding physical effects of arthritis and medication).

Only one I can think of is "Another Alice" by author Alice Peterson.
True story about a young tennis player who is struck down by RA. She has written other books since, but not sure what the subject matter is.

Those 'wee' kittens aren't so wee anymore!! Arnie is almost the size of a fully grown cat and willow is slowly catching up! And they both can jump on our side units in the lounge (which I panic about as I have my fav collection of devonshire blue vases and fruit bowl on the units!), bedroom draws, window sills and toilet and sides in the bathroom! They can both jump so high it shocks me & my OH. Arnie nearly took a swim in the loo this morning! He jumped as I lifted the loo seat up but I managed to get my hand under him before he fell in, then the little mischief fell off the window sill in our bedroom and was caught up in the blinds beaded string and pulled the whole lot off!
I will send you any new pictures I've got of the not so wee babies!

Loving A street cat named Bob nearly 70% of the way through now, I really do recommend it to any cat lovers. I will review it when finished!

I enjoyed the series Call the Midwife. I have recently read The Sugar Girls, about the young women who worked at the Tate & Lyle sugar factory, which was excellent. I was pleased to find there is a Sugar Girls website, & a couple of them (many are no longer with us) were on a chat show on radio 4 recently.

I've just finished The Crimson Rooms by Katharine McMahon It's the story of Evelyn one of the first female lawyers in the UK set just after WW1. For me it was a fascinating read bringing in Evelyn's home life, a love interest and also the prejudices she faced being a woman in a man's world.

    Excellent 5*s

I have now finished the first five books in the George RR Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire The tv series Game of Thrones is based on this series and they have done a good job.

I have enjoyed these books. I think the first three were the best - they were pacey. The last two books have been slower - he has been filling in all the detail ready for the final showdown in the seventh book I think. There are over 1000 characters but it is easy to keep track because each chapter is written from a different character's viewpoint and you quickly remember who all the pertinent characters are. The books are a bit like historical fiction but set in a different world where dragons and some magic exists. It has been described as being a bit War of the Roses.
For the first three books I would give ***** but for these last two ****
It is a big commitment to read them all - each book is BIG!!

I am waiting for April's book of the month to get to the library. I might have to read something else while I wait!

I went for my first actual swim today - the last two weeks I have been walking widths and today I swam. Only 100m but it is a start. Soon be back to my usual mile a day!!

Thanks Bubba and Toni for your good wishes. I can't believe how well I am doing. Nothing like the last time!

Yes, please suggest some good books! I have just put Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on my library list to fill the gap until April's BOTM turns up. I have just started The Elegance of The Hedgehog. I bought it years ago and never got round to it so this gap is just the time to start!

I want to give our new members chance to make recommendations for Book of The Month as it's only fair to do and if they can't decide, give any of our other members a chance before I'd make a choice for May's Book of the Month. So I will give it till after the weekend, Monday for any bookies recommendations for May's Book of the Month and if none come forward I will choose a book. :?

I finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close last night.
It is mostly told from 9 year old Oskar's point of view. Oskar's Dad died in the twin towers on 9/11 and we are now two years down the line. One day he goes into his Dad's closet, for comfort really, and finds a vase, which he breaks, and there is a key inside within an envelope with "Black" written on it. There begins his adventure trying to find what the key is for. (His Dad used to set him little puzzle-adventures so he sort of treats it like another of those.
Alongside this main story is the back story of his Grandma and Granddad told through letters they have written. His Granddad was an elective mute and he left the Gran when he found out she was pregnant so his letters are to his unborn child (Oskar's Dad). The reason for his muteness is revealed slowly.
I thought this was a really good book. It kept me interested the whole way through. Oskar is funny but his story was sad. As was his Gran and Granddad's stories.
    So *****

Thank you for reviewing Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for us Frogmella. As you may have read I'm not to good at the moment so may not be around all the time so bear with me, I will choose a Book of the Month but it may take a bit longer due to me not being to good. I know the book club will be in good hands while I'll not to good.
