I have a few  books on my kindle, that I haven't read yet, so have been looking through for inspiration.

How about Flowertown by S.G.Redling or The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker? The second book would be my first choice but reviews mention it does go back and forth through time which I know Amanda isn't keen on. It does have excellent reviews and seems a 'different' type of book.

I have just finished an easy read by M.C.Beaton called Death of a Cad, it is the first murder mystery I have read of hers and it was good. No gore, bit of romance, just pleasant. Thoroughly enjoyable :D

It would be nice to have an upbeat book for Christmas, we could include 'The Art Of Hearing Heartbeats as a 2nd Choice if everyone is happy with that? So everyone keep your eyes peeled for an upbeat book for 'Book Of The Month!!

Just been having a look on amazon. How about You had me at hello by Mhairi McFarlane? It is only 99p on kindle and looks like it is "upbeat"! The reviews are good for "chick lit"! I looked at my whole shortlist at the library and none of them are "upbeat"!! I must like to get depressed when I read!!

I am enjoying Doctor Sleep. I have still got the Dawn French and then I am getting Letters from Skye to read next. Should keep me quiet for a bit, eh?

    Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
This is the sequel to The Shining and we get to find out what happened to Danny, the little boy. Shining is the name that a character in the first book gave to the ability to read minds etc.
In this book there are a group of "people" hunting kids with the shining so that they can kill them and inhale their "steam" as they call it.
I really enjoyed this book, although it is not as tense as the shining was. Still top form King though so *****

    Thanks everyone :)

    Upbeat and weepy....

    Weepy fist methinks.

    I just finished
The light between Oceans by M L Stedman

This book centres on a couple, a lovely couple kind and sweet, he a first WW hero. Isobel and Tom.

He works on an isolated island miles form civilisation as the Lighthouse Keeper. She adores him at first sight. They marry and she joins him there adjusting well to the isolation (3 monthly visits with supplies from the mainland) and sadly miscarries 3 babies and then goes into a really early menopause.

One night a boat is washed up and in it is a dead man and a 3 month old baby girl. You probably guessed it, but she persuades him to let them keep her. He buries the soldier's body and fails to report what happened; a real stickler for rules (army back ground), not easy for him to do. The baby changes their lives so much for the better.

Having recently lost her last baby its easy to pass her off as their own and to convince themselves that the child had no Mother.

But when they return to the mainland for a break and the Christening they discover who her 'real Mother' is and Tom's conscience pricks.....

Things escalte as you can imagine, but this is a story of enduring love and hope, grief and forgiveness. Beautiful, but sad too. Trust me a good read.

    I give it 4 and a half *

    Love

Oooh, Toni! That book is going on my list now, this minute! In fact I have just done it!

I have started the Dawn French, so I am going to hurry through that one to get to Letters From Skye. It is that time of year when it is dark so early that what else is there to do but read?!

I am a bit bored with the dawn french, don't really care about any of the characters so far, so I am going to abandon it for now and start Letters From Skye instead. If nothing else comes in the mean time I will return to it when I have finished this one!

I quite liked it Frogmella :?

Shame that, but I am the same - if I don't 'feel' for any of the characters there's no point.

    enjoy letters from Skye

I also agree! If you can't get a feel for a book and you really can't be bothered with it, just put it down and move to another book, you may want to try it again at a later date. Reading is about relaxing and enjoying a book.

Toni, we haven't had an autobiography in a long while, we have never actually had one as a Book of the Month!! I have 2 autobiographies in my 'to read' pile of hardback books in the book cupboard! I may read one after I've finished the one I'm reading at present.
You should put the David Jason book on your Christmas list, or as I call it humongous clues left for OH to see!!:lol:

LOL! Bubba, you are naughty!

I am really enjoying Letters From Skye. I reckon I will finish it today.

I got an e-mail from water pebbles the other day with the Costa shortlist on it. I had read one of the books and already had one on my library shortlist but have since added another one - all the birds singing - which is winging its way through the library system to me as I type.

Off to swim fit and then aqua zumba this morning. I might be good for little other than reading this afternoon, especially after I walk the dogs too!!

Just read Animating Maria and Marrying Harriet by M.C. Beaton They are silly and light books which had me giggling. 35p on Kindle so doesn't break the bank. If you like happy books Amanda, I wonder if you might like these? My other usual choice of book is not what you read, but you may enjoy her books.

Just reading Maggie Shayne, Sleep with the lights On as I fancy something a bit grimmer now I feeling a bit more myself. Wisdom tooth infection has cleared fortunately. Just need the inflammation in my jaw to clear now!

Ah, Suzy, you are going through the mill again, aren't you? I hope you get a good spell now.

Just finished Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole
This is a book that is a series of letters. It is over two time zones, so maybe not a book that Amanda will enjoy. The first period is the early 1910s through to the end of WWI and these letters are between Elspeth and Davey. Elspeth is a poet living on Skye and Davey is an American who writes her a fan letter and their correspondence begins there. The second time period is the 1940s and there are letters between Margaret, Elspeth's Daughter and Paul, Margaret's chap as well as some between Elspeth and Margaret and others with Uncles and Grandparents too.
Essentially Elspeth has never told Margaret her story when a bomb hits their Edinburgh flat and Margaret finds Elspeth with a pile of letters. Elspeth disappears and so Margaret tries to find both her and also her story.
It is a love story with several twists and turns and I loved it.

    Good day everyone,

I hope everyone is 'relatively' OK.

I have just got back into reading after a few years off , and I love it!

The first book I read was 'Very bad men' by Harry Dolan, It's a crime fiction. I would strongly recommend. The second that I have only just started to read is 'Cold cruel winter' by Chris Nickson. It is set in Leeds, England 1732! I just wondered if anyone else has read these books?

I used to love as a child, 'Goosebumps' both book and TV series.

A very warm welcome AvadaKedavra to 'The Book Club' and thank you for the little review on 'Very Bad Men' by 'Harry Dolan' If you look back over a couple of pages you will see how we review books so everyone can read it.
You will also see we do a 'Book Of The Month' which someone suggests and everyone can read it if they want to. It opens up everyone's choice to different genres they may never have tried.
We hope you enjoy the Book Club and I look forward to reading your reviews in the future.
Oh by the way we always let the new members choose a book for the next 'Book Of The Month' So you can choose 'January's Book Of The Month' You have a few weeks to decide on a book  Welcome to 'The Book Club'.

Hello, thank you very much. I better get reading then eh?!

It seems like the reviews people do on here, are formatted in bold font, I am sure I'll get the hang of it.

Bold font is just the way some of us do it, you don't have to use it, you do whatever is comfortable for you. :)
