One of my recent books is 'The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker. This gets 5* from me. It is pure fantasy about the Golem (a woman made from clay) and a Djini (gene) who's lives are set in New York. It is about how they have to learn to live amongst and with humans and is a wonderful yarn. If you fancy something a bit different it's well worth giving this a go.

If you like a book that ties in the past and the future I can highly recommend any book by Barbara Erskine. My friend got me started on them and I love them.

I also like the call the midwife series And otherbooks like that as you can almost be relieved we have a somewhat better, if dysfunctional health care system xxxx

Heyho Frogmella hope you are enjoying your hols :)

    :bouncing-ball:

Hi Legs - I just had a look at the blurb on that book. Looks a very different kind of read to me, but since you got me reading Joanne Harris....I might just have to give it a go ;)

Sarahd - I like books like call the midwife too - really good on audio as not scary at all!! I have read one or two 'Philomena' being one about unmarried Mothers in the 50's. Also makes me glad I live now ;)

    Love

    Hi Toni,

I do recommend it but if you don't fancy that one you (and others of course) could try The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne. Another 5* read.

Now that does look interesting Legs. Worthy of being a Book of the Month, but that would let you off the hook ;)

Hi Legs, good to see you! That Lisa Ballantyne is on my library shortlist, will bump it up now! That other book looks fab too, but is not in the library

Hi, Toni! I am enjoying my hols!!

I am also really enjoying The Two of Us and will finish it today. I picked up Summer Lies Bleeding while I was in the library yesterday. It looks good from the outside (I know - never judge a book....) and was on the reader recommended shelf! So, High hopes!!

Good to see a few new/returning faces on here. More reading inspirations!

I am enjoying my impulse library book - Summer Lies Bleeding by Nuala Casey.
I have given up on the idea of a camper van now and we are going to try tent camping in two weekends time for the weekend to see if we like it.
Legs - I hope you do enjoy the Humans. Mr F read it and he liked it....
Toni - I haven't read anything by Tanya Bullock - sorry!

Phew! Glad you enjoyed it Legs! I thought it was fab. Made you really think about being human. Funny but with a serious side.

After mowing the grass (won't call it a lawn!) I spent a while reading my book. It is really good. Want to know what is going to happen.

I have just finished reading my first BOTM "What kind Of Mother Are You?" By Paula Daly

I really enjoyed this book. The characters that you were meant to like you did despite their failings. The situation that most stayed with me was where one of the central characters realizes that she has done something pretty awful. Her shock and disbelief sent goose bumps up my spine.

One of the main characters did have rather a lot happen to her in a short space of time but apart from that, the pace went on very nicely. Even up to the end there were surprise twists and turns that I hadn't expected and when I looked back, I could see that there were indicators and they hadn't just popped out of nowhere!

Well worth a read if you like suspense and a book that doesn't end as you think it will!

    Hello Legs, Frogmella and Alumina

I have read 'Agatha's first case' by MC Beaton. A one-off short story giving some of Agatha's history :)

    Very enjoyable :)

    Hello Toni,

Well, I didn't know that there was a new Agatha Raisin about. What a miss! I have just ordered it. Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? :D

It's a teeny-tiny Alumina, but as ever with an 'Agatha' well-worth it ;)

Now can anyone remember whether we have chosen our BOTM for September?

We can't wait for Amanda to get back to start thinking.....

I just spotted this one The sudden Departure of the Frasers by Louise Candlish it's on offer on kindle for £1.79???

    BUT all suggestions gratefully received

May I suggest BOTM be The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne. I think folk would really enjoy this, though I'm not offended if you don't choose it :D

Legs - I am happy for that to be one of the BOTM. We have been having two recently so we could choose Toni's as well?
I have just collected Just What Kind of Mother are you from the library along with Our Endless Numbered Days. Must finish my current one and get cracking!
We have now got our tent - my friend from swimming has sold us one of her "spare" ones and they came round to show us how to put it up this morning. Maybe I will sit in there and read it!!

Mmmmm......maybe the tent is to try next decent bit of weather Legs?? Mind you we do have glorious sunshine ATM in the Midlands where Frogmella lives too :?

    Right I think we're agreed:

    September's BOTMs are:
The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne, (in my wish list already Legs!!) and The sudden Departure of the Frasers
    by Louise Candlish

No compulsion to read both - we've just been giving people a choice ;)

    Love

I didn't end up sitting in the tent but it was up for the downpour and remained dry inside!

I finished Summer lies Bleeding by Nuala Casey on Saturday.
It is a tense read bringing four separate sets of people together in the final act. There is the man who is travelling to London to avenge his sister's murder, the couple traveling to the fertility clinic, the couple opening a new restaurant and a woman with OCD working at an investment bank. Their lives have and will intersect both before the story, during and after.
I enjoyed it and so award ****.

I have started Our Endless Numbered Days now. Today is chore day though, so I might not get much read today!

Wow, so glad i found this thread! i love a good book, though at present our house move unpacking is going extremely slow so every time i think about sitting down with a good book, i can see all the work unpacking that still needs doing around me. Summer weather here in Wales has been like mid autumn so can't sit outside.. Got imaginative then and have been leaving my reading till its too late in the evening for anything to be done around the house, so can read guilt free ;)

i'm currently working my way through the latter few pages of this thread, making note of all the good and not so good reads, so can look for one at the library tomorrow - that should then cover me for this coming bank holiday weekend. i do have a huge amount of books myself already that are still waiting to be read, but yep! still in boxes waiting to be unpacked. :/

Welcome to the club, JPH! We always like a new member! I love the library too, they know me on sight these days!! As a new member maybe you would like to think of a book of the month for October? No pressure - we can choose whether to read it or not, but we all love it when new people chuck some ideas into the ring!

Hey Toni! What a coincidence that you are also reading Our endless numbered days! I am really enjoying it. The Dad is a bit of a weird so far. I'm guessing that he doesn't get any better!

Looking forward to tenting next weekend - this time next week I'll be packing up the car ready to go!!
