Welcome from me too JPH
Our founder Bubbadog is on her hols at the mo, but she will be along to welcome you when she gets back:)
Ah yes Frogmella the Dad is rather odd I shall say no more.
I am going to post my review for August BOTM now in-case I forget
Just what kind of Mother are you by Paula Daly
A fairly simple book, contemporary fiction catering around a busy working woman, Lisa and her family, set in The Lake District. Other characters include a likeable female Police detective and her odd Aunt who lives with her.
Like many women these days Lisa has to work as well as bring up her children. Like many women she often feels she doesn’t do either job very well.
A 13 year-old girl is abducted, turning up alive some hours later after a nasty ordeal
Lisa’s eldest daughter, (12/13), is supposed to have her friend over to stay the night to work on a school project, but ends up unwell and doesn’t go into school. Being very busy Lisa doesn’t let the Mother know relying on her daughter to text her friend. The following day it is discovered that the girl is missing…..
Therein follows the search for the missing girl and filling out of other characters’ lives….another girl goes missing….Lisa’s friend overdoses….
I shan’t tell you any more as it will spoil the story! I did enjoy the book, a nice light read, nothing too taxing or challenging. All done and dusted within 24 hours
I think I’d give it **** stars
Love

Thanks for the warm welcome
While i do have a lot of health issues going on now, and with the never ending unpacking i just can't even bring myself to start, i haven't done much reading of late, however, there is one series that stuck in my mind from a while ago, thats how enthralled i was with it!
one word of warning though if you haven't already gone into this series, they are all really thick heavy books.
My mum read them, herself being an avid reader, she thought i might enjoy the series.
From what i recall, its much about the lives of people in a clan of mammoth hunters, their lives, loves, traditions.
I couldn't remember the author at first, but after googling, i recognised it straight away. Jean. M. Auel
if you want to take a look and have a preview, its here - if the link doesn't work, just google The Mammoth Hunters, the whole page about the books and author show up then

As for October, i'd be glad too, there is one book i have that my mum (rip) recommended to me as a good read.. its not a new release, but does look as if it'll be enjoyable. I'll get hubby to rummage around the boxes for it and get started on that this weekend - the rain is setting in so i won't be going anywhere ... and nothing better than settling in with a good book"You know you have RA when half brushed hair is awesome"0 -
Sounds to me like your Mum was like my Mum, (also RIP), a major influence on your reading.
I really miss passing books on to mine
Please do see if you can locate a title for BOTM and Alumina we haven't forgotten you
Have you got any ideas? maybe for November?

Hello again. I haven't forgotten you either; family and health issues have been occupying me this month. I will try to think up a possible BOTM for November. Will get back to you on that.
JPH I have been a real fan of Jean Auel's books and especially the first four in the series. After that, I didn't think they were quite so good and I never did read the final book in the series. My favourite was "The Mammoth Hunters" because I liked the isolation and the snow! Bad for arthritis though living in cold draughty caves! Glad to have you around. I am new here myself."Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

Hi, I have just found this thread. I love reading. Don't have a favourite genre, like most things except horror.
I particularly enjoy Ken Follet and am waiting for the last of his Century trilogy.
I have just finished peaches for monsieur le cure by Joanne Harris. She absolutely stimulates all of your senses!!0 -
I've just finished (reluctantly) Sycamore Row by John Grisham. I say reluctantly because when I find (in my estimation) a truly good book I ration the amount per day which I can read to prolong its pleasure.
I gave up on Grisham when they became too 'lawyerly' but this had a high level of human interest. I have just started the Jesse Stone series by (I think) Robert B Parker. I read them in hardback years ago, I recently saw the films on Channel 5 (with Tom Selleck (Sellick?) as Jesse) and found them quite haunting, so now I'm back to the printed version on Kindle.
So far, so good. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
I miss passing books onto my Mom too! My mom was always reading. Made buying presents easy!
Those Mammoth Hunter books sound good. Will have to add them to my ever-growing shortlist!
It is good to see the book club a bit busier. I'm sure Bubba will be very happy when she gets back! Oh, as for BOTM, could alumina and JPH both suggest one - especially as we tend to have two BOTM these days?0 -

Hello, Yes, I can do that. Apart from probably not being in hardback and not being likely to cause offense, are there any other things you would like me to avoid?
Oh, and is this for October? Thank you. I want to do it "right"!"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

Hello and welcome. I am new here too and have been very happy to find the thread. I have always been an avid reader and, as I said elsewhere, I never go anywhere, and I mean anywhere, without my book!"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

Alumina - I think it doesn't matter too much what format as most members read on kindle. I get mine from the library and don't mind how they come! It can be a book that you have read that you really enjoyed or one that you want to read. There are no rules! And finally, it will be for the October BOTM. Normally Bubba starts asking for suggestions around the middle of th month so you have some time to dwell on it!
I'm back to school tomorrow so less time free to read for me. But I think the weekend of camping will afford me some time to read this weekend! Hope for sun and not rain over the white peak this weekend! :sun:0 -
Thank you for that Frogmella. I didn't want to go wrong before I had even begun!
I hope the weather bucks up for your weekend away."Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

Hi 23455 Nice to meet you.
Hey Alumina, nice to finally meet you too
I have a quick question before i get a new book from the library..
As there are no 117 pages on the thread, and it'd take forever to go through them all, can i ask in here if anyone has already read and done a BOTM review for any of these? I think i prefer the last one, but want to make sure it hasn't already been done in here first -
The Fault in Our Stars written by: John Green
I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban Written by: Malala Yousafzai
Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend
Written by: Matthew Dicks
i'm ok doing my review october, but i haven't started reading yet, so am ok if anyone else has one they are ready to post about for the October botm.. i don't mind if i do mine then or later..
23455, do you have any recently finished or near to finishing you'd like to review? - its ok to say no"You know you have RA when half brushed hair is awesome"0 -
The other i heard was a good read (recommended by mum ) was
Tuesdays Child by Dale Mayer
Has anyone read it?
if i get a bunch of no's for the books above, then i'll have a good selection to read and review"You know you have RA when half brushed hair is awesome"0 -

Hi JPH,
I'm no expert on this thread as I only dip in when I'm able. I don't know whether anyone's reviewed these books so if no comes back to you why don't you look on the reviews on Amazon? I don't want you to be held up on getting your next library book

Morning JPH. You are asking questions that I thought of asking.
I have decided on my BOTM but the more I think of a book and other people's reactions to it, the more uncertain I become! I am sticking with it though as all the books I have thought of raise questions!"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

We've definitely done The Fault in our Stars as it was v popular last year when my Lucy started with her cancer.
Not sure about I am Malala though so go ahead Alumina and Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend:)
If I read the BOTM early I usually prepare it in 'word' and post it the last day of the month/beg of following else I forget (she of small memory  )
A welcome to 23455 from me too

Ooh! I didn't realise choosing a BOTM would cause such headaches for you!! To be fair I agonised over my first choice. Not everyone liked it but some did! That is the way it goes!
I read The Fault in Our Stars a while ago.
Being back at school is a nuisance - not enough time to read!! I did read a bit on our successful camping trip last weekend but not enough! We did a massive walk on Saturday and then home Sunday so not enough free time!0 -
Hello Frogmella. Glad you had a good weekend away.
Choosing the BOTM is more problematic than I had thought at first. There seems to be a few things to bear in mind. Having run around in my mind as to why some people may not like "A" and other won't like "B", I decided to just apply my practical considerations (price, availability, lack of offensiveness etc.) and just go for it! We shall see!"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."

Hi Guys, I'm back!! Thanks for doing a great job while I was away sunning myself! And welcome to JPH & 23455 glad your getting stuck in to the club already!
Here's the review of Laws of Gravity.
The Laws Of Gravity By Liz Rosenberg
Nicole & Ari are Cousin's and have been the best of friends since childhood until Nicole has to ask Ari for core blood that he has saved for his children in case of an emergency that she needs to save her life. And Ari's decision takes the story on a roller-coaster of emotions. I wasn't sure if the book was me after two chapters but I kept on and I couldn't put it down over my holiday. I have to say it is now in my top 10 of my favourite books.
RATING:*****/*****0 -
WELCOME HOME Amanda!! We missed you
I hope you had a great break and have been well?
Thanks for the reviews
